Closing Keynote: Open Educational Resources in the Future of Education: Materials Made for the New 2020 Reality

DESCRIPTION
Open educational resources have found their way into classrooms all over the world over the past decade.  As classrooms change and learning evolves, free and flexible materials are uniquely designed to change with the education landscape.  Rice University’s OpenStax textbooks have saved students more than $1 Billion on textbook costs and have been used by more than 36,000 educators and 14 million students.  The unprecedented events of 2020 present OpenStax and the OER movement with new opportunities: what has always been important to OpenStax and the OER movement — truly equitable access and diversity, equity, and inclusion in content and practices — is now critical to the success of students and institutions everywhere.

Tracking Faculty Adoption Across Campus

DESCRIPTION
Understanding student and faculty perceptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) materials is an important first step of campus adoption programs/committees. A second important step is tracking faculty adoptions across campus to understand elements of student impact. This session explores how an OER Working Group determined what information to collect and why.

Meeting Immediate Needs Through OER Advocacy During a Pandemic

DESCRIPTION
The transition to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic forced faculty members with the challenge of providing required course content in an online format. In an effort to support faculty members working on transitioning their classroom courses to a remote learning environment, Library Services continued its advocacy efforts through professional development programs. Offering numerous workshops during a week in March, librarians were able to demonstrate how to locate, evaluate, and adopt OER. In addition to searching for OER, librarians discussed how to use tools like Faculty Select (Ebsco) to use existing library eBooks to make the transition to remote learning easier while using this opportunity to discuss the difference between subscription resources and open content. These efforts have proven successful as faculty member adoption of OER content has increased.

Taking OER to the LIS: Launching an Open Education Course for Library Science Students

DESCRIPTION
While there are open education continuing education programs for practicing librarians, there were no known courses focusing on open education in any of the ALA-accredited library science programs. This presentation will focus on the development and delivery of an online, one-credit course in Open Education Librarianship for the San Jose State University iSchool. Attendees will learn about the nature of the course, its learning objectives, structure and content. To encourage aspiring librarians to develop an appreciation of or passion for open education it is desirable to incorporate it into the LIS curriculum. This presentation will consider the potential and effectiveness of this approach for developing the next generation of Open Education Librarians.

Open Education During the COVID-19 Era

DESCRIPTION
This keynote address will address how open educational resources address the pressing needs of students and faculty as we navigate the many educational challenges that come with the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, this talk will address how OER improves the conditions of marginalized student and faculty populations, who have particularly deleterious experiences, through more inclusive and equitable practices. The keynote will also challenge the audience to think more critically about traditional academic practices, procedures, and infrastructure by encouraging the adoption of open education philosophies at the institutional level.
